Our Mission
Utahealthnet is a statewide consumer health information infrastructure project sponsored by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah. Funded by a grant from the National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health, Utahealthnet is developing statewide collaborations and communication pathways with an emphasis on the human connection. The goal of Utahealthnet is to increase access to high quality health information, resources, services and programs in order to increase the quality of life for all Utah residents and visitors. The focus is on health information, services and support throughout the state which will serve Utah's health information seekers regardless of geographic location.

The core partners who have joined Utahealthnet at its start in 2005 are: the Utah Department of Health, the Utah Telehealth Network and the Utah State Library Division. Many other community health information providers are continually joining Utahealthnet and thus enriching the project by broadening access to their valuable resources.

Selection Criteria for Utahealthnet.org
The Utahealthnet website provides health information which is of high quality and reliability for its users. The following criteria are used by the professional medical librarians who make selections for inclusion in utahealthnet.org
  • Availability
  • Credibility
  • Authorship
  • External Links
  • Legality

For a further explanation of these criteria, please refer to the following article: Schneider, Karen G. 'Beyond Algorithms: A Librarian's Guide to Finding Web Sites You Can Trust', 2006.

Some additional evaluative resources that provided criteria in reviewing websites include:

  • The Health Summit Working Group
The Health Information Technology Institute of Mitretek Systems convened a Health Summit Working Group to develop a set of criteria for use in assessing the quality of health information on the Internet. They have also developed an "I.Q. Tool" that assists users in evaluating health-related websites. Click on "Begin Using I.Q."

  • The Health on the Net Foundation
HON's site was posted on the World Wide Web on March 20, 1996, and became one of the very first URLs to guide both lay users and medical professionals to reliable sources of healthcare information in cyberspace. Among HON's distinguishing features are two widely-used medical search tools, MedHunt© and HONselect©, plus The HON Code of Conduct (HONcode©) for the provision of authoritative, trustworthy Web-based medical information.
